The purpose of this forum is to bring together representatives of Constitutional Tribunals, Courts, and Councils from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in the Americas and Europe. It is held every two years and it enables the exchange of experiences and outlooks about current matters taking place in the region´s constitutional systems, aiming to find better answers for the challenges posed to constitutional justice. During each edition, seminars on specific topics on constitutional law are offered to officials from the Constitutional Courts of the party-members.
Considering previous experiences (i.e. the Lisbon Conference from 1995, the Madrid Conference from 1998, the Guatemala Conference from 1999, and the Sevilla Conference form 2005), the Conference adopted its statues during in 2006 at the city of Santiago, Chile. The Mexican Supreme Court of Justice has been an active participant in the Ibero-American Conference since 1998, which has allowed its representative to have first-hand experience on the challenges posed to constitutional justice from a comparative law perspective. In April 2009, the Supreme Court of Mexico hosted the VII Ibero-American Conference on Constitutional Justice in Merida, Yucatan. The last Conference was held between the 16th and 18th of May 2018, in Panama City, Panama.
